The Capoeira Arts Academy offers capoeira classes for children, teens, and adults six days a week. The classes include all aspects of this African-Brazilian art-form, including martial arts, music, dance, gymnastics, history, language, and the cultural background of capoeira.

I am interested in tyring Capoeira, how can I learn more? People interested in learning more about capoeira, or simply trying a class, are encouraged to take a free trial class during any scheduled beginner class.

I am ready to go to my first class, what do I need to know? You do not need to pre-register for your free trial class. Just show up a few minutes early to any of our beginner, or children's, classes, check in with the instructor and have a look around. It is acceptable for beginners to wear any type of exercise clothing in the academy, but sweat pants and a t-shirt are suggested and most people train barefoot. Most of all, be prepared for a workout and to have fun!

Do I need to be in great shape to start capoeira? No. You do not need to be in great shape because everybody starts at their own level. All that is needed is the willingness to learn new concepts and the desire to workout. You do not need to be in top condition to start capoeira, but capoeira will get you in top condition! (If you have any serious injuries or a medical condition which restricts your physical exertion, you should consult your doctor and inform the instructor when registering.)

How often should I practice? Anything is better than nothing - even a single class can be rewarding. In capoeira however, as with most things, more is definitely better. Practicing three classes per week is ideal for the average person to get/stay in great shape and keep progressing in the art form. For serious and determined athletes, practicing four to five sessions per week is recommended.

What kind of workout will I get?

Your workout experience in capoeira will be a little different in each class. Classes will regularly provide an excellent cardiovascular workout as well as a strengthening and conditioning workout for all of the major muscle groups. Each class begins with a complete warm up and stretch, which is followed by a variety of different exercises most of which are unique to capoeira.

Is Capoeira just an exercise class, or is there more to it? Although we stress getting a great workout in our classes, there is so much more to Capoeira than just exercise. Learning Capoeira is also about learning a new language, philosophy and history, playing instruments and singing songs. There is also a deep-rooted sense of cultural awareness and community involvement in the art. Capoeira can truly be a way of life.
